Great collaborations just don't happen. They take time, trust, and effort. We have been very fortunate to work with clients (who become friends), to create homes. Each reflects the unique people who reside within them. It is a journey that we feel very honored to take from start to finish with them.

We practice what we preach! After developing ‘Green’ strategies for clients over the years, we wanted to apply many of the techniques, systems and products within the design of our new home and studio. We achieved a LEED Silver rating and are participation with the Build for America program to accurately monitor the systems performance. The house has a geothermal mechanical system that is linked to the water heating system. In hot weather we have the ability to pull cool air from the courtyard, thru the stair well and out the roof. The roof is designed for a future planted system and is prewired for a photovoltaic array. The landscape materials were selected for each particular zone of the property and for their drought tolerance. The entry courtyard allows for a controlled transition from the public street, capturing the sound of the pool fountain at the entry. The living level is focused on the exterior pool/koi courtyard and opens onto the large deck fashioned after the Japanese engawa. The 2nd level studio was designed to benefit from the constant north light allowing us to work with even natural lighting throughout the day. -
Allen Road Residence
This LEED certified home is sited on a large sloping, wooded in-town lot. The 4 bedroom/ 3.5 bath home has geothermal heating & cooling, spray foam insulation and operable energy efficient windows located to enhance cross ventilation. A large 2nd floor terrace provides views to the street and rear yard, a courtyard expands the dining room outdoors. During the site development phase of this project, several large white oaks were harvested and milled for the interior flooring material. Other amenities include a wine cellar, an exercise room and a large screened porch that is designed to accommodate a future outdoor kitchen with a wood fired brick oven. -
Ashley Avenue Residence
Love of gospel music, southern roots, love for landscaping and a banking career all blended together to create the driving forces behind this design. The home not only has a small physical footprint but also a small energy footprint. The many energy efficient features including a 500 gallon rain cistern helped earn this home an EarthCraft certification. With eyes fixed on the future, a site across from the future Beltline Park was selected. A small, fire damaged home was removed and a new home that takes scalar and material cues from the neighborhood was built. The compact home has 3 bedrooms and 2 ½ baths on two floors with a feature “dipping pool” in the courtyard that is accessed from the living room through large sliding doors for cooling off during the hot summer days. -

Enticed by the developing restaurants and shops, the owners purchased a narrow vacant lot in the Old Fourth Ward for their home. The 3 bedroom, 3 ½ bath home has a separate office and a secured courtyard with a koi pond tucked between the house and the detached garage. The home reaches to the exterior with porches that open off of the living room, kitchen and master bedroom. The roof top terrace provides expansive views that capture the stars and city skyline. The home has many energy efficient features. The stairwell acts as a passive ventilation shaft, the hot air rises, drawing cooler air from the garden level. This house received the Premium Earthcraft certification. -
Kendall Street Studios/Residence
Overlooking Freedom Parkway perched on a 36’ wide infill lot in the Old Fourth Ward, the studio/residence, reaches high to satiate the desire for light, space and views. The simple organization separates working, living and sleeping into three levels. Life revolves around food and this home revolves around the kitchen, serving both as a center stage for daily living as well as a backdrop for casual entertaining. The elevated decks, roof patio and the Zen garden and fountain provide exterior rooms that expand the living spaces. -
Ormond Overlook
The goal for this project was to replace six decaying duplexes with homes that would provide contemporary amenities and secure parking, while maintaining a relationship to the neighborhood and to the street. Each two duplexes share a courtyard, entry to each unit is from this courtyard, through a private front porch and garden. The entry porch is flanked by garden walls that serve as sitting areas inviting neighbors to gather. Large windows open to the courtyard allowing natural ventilation throughout the house. These homes provide spacious living and carry the interior to the exterior via the balcony doors. The small yard is supplemented by the rooftop terraces with views to the Braves stadium and downtown skyline. The project provides the homeowners dynamic views to the city and creates a dynamic streetscape for Mechanicsville.
